Nebraska Won’t Pay Off Misprinted Lottery Tickets

The Nebraska Lottery will not pay out to dozens of players who thought they won prizes in a holiday scratch-off game due to misprinted tickets. The lottery cancelled its Holiday Bonus Bucks game when the mistake came to light in September, but 405 tickets had been sold before the game was cancelled. Lottery officials said state law does not compel the lottery to pay out on tickets printed in error.

Nebraska Won’t Pay Off Misprinted Lottery Tickets

Though about 405 scratch-off lottery tickets were sold before the Nebraska Lottery cancelled the game due to printing errors, the lottery announced it will not be paying off players who thought they won prizes

The state lottery cancelled its Holiday Bonus Bucks game in September after discovering the mistake by International Game Technology, the company that produced the tickets. About 405 tickets had been sold before mistake was found within two hours of the game’s opening, according to the Associated Press.

Prizes on the misprinted ran few dollars to $40,000 prizes. However, Nebraska state law does not legally obligate the Nebraska Lottery to pay prize money for tickets that are produced or issued in error, Brian Rockey, state lottery director told the AP.

“We’ve never had anything like this, to this degree. It was a real fluke,” Rockey said. “I’m glad we were able to catch it when we did or there would be many more disappointed people.”

The Nebraska Lottery is now asking anyone who purchased a Holiday Bonus Bucks ticket to return the card by March 24. Those who send in the tickets will receive Lottery scratch coupons in return.
