Netherlands Could Tax Online Gambling at 20 Percent

The Netherlands Council of Ministers has approved language for a 20 percent gross revenue tax on online gambling operators in new gambling laws under consideration.

The Netherlands is close to approving regulated online gaming and the Dutch Council of Minsters has approved proposed language in new gaming laws, which would tax online operators at 20 percent of gross revenue.

The new proposed gaming laws maintain a 29 percent gross revenue tax on land-based casinos.

Though many Dutch lawmakers were pushing for a higher online tax, officials reportedly wanted to keep the rate lower to encourage online operators locating in the country. Still, many analysts see the 20 percent as still too high.

Under the new law, another 2 percent of gross gaming revenues will be dedicated to gambling addiction prevention.
