Netherlands Plans Gaming Tax Hike

The government of the Netherlands wants to temporarily raise the country’s gaming tax rate from 29 percent to 30.1 percent. Lawmakers say the rate hike would take effect in 2018 and revert to the lower rate in 2019.

Hague overrules Betsson

Lawmakers in the Netherlands plan to raise the country’s gross gaming tax from 29 percent to 30.1 percent for a six-month period.

GamblingCompliance.com reports that the plan, published in the 2018 budget last month, would be part of larger initiative to regulate the gaming market and open Dutch iGaming to operators outside the country’s borders.

The new rules, whereby unlicensed operators can now be fined, was opposed by Malta-based online gambling operator Betsson. Betsson took the matter to the Hague, but its argument—that Kansspelautoriteit’s new rules violate EU regulations that allow operators to freely distribute their services and products in the region—was shot down by the court.
