Nevada Expands Betting

From the Oscars to eSports, the range of legal wagering in the Silver State is going to get a lot wider. Under the terms of a new law recently signed by Governor Brian Sandoval (l.), starting in July, regulators will begin issuing licenses and modifying existing rules to accommodate all kinds of action. Only politics will be excluded.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has signed a bill into law that expands parimutuel wagering to embrace a whole new range of events, from eSports to the Oscars and Grammys.

Set to take effect July 1, Senate Bill 240 empowers the Nevada Gaming Commission to issue the appropriate licenses and also adopt or modify regulations related to various event-wagering possibilities. Only politics is specifically excluded from the mix.

State regulators already allow betting on eSports. The legislation codifies such wagering as law.

It also envisions the appointment of a special Off-Track Pari-Mutuel Wagering Committee to oversee the expanded activities.

In signing the bill Sandoval said that there was a lot for him to learn about video gaming, and that he wanted to be receptive to a new generation of gamers.
