Nevada Union Members Take to the Picket Lines

In keeping with their warning to picket Downtown Las Vegas casinos that have not yet signed new contract deals with their unionized employees, about 2,000 members of Culinary Local 226 recently walked in front of 10 casinos, carrying picket signs. They have also signed a strike authorization.

Ten Downtown casinos targeted

About 2,000 members of the Nevada Culinary Union recently picketed in Downtown Las Vegas to draw attention to ongoing contract talks. The union has yet to reach new contracts with 10 casinos in the vicinity, including the Fremont, the D, the Golden Nugget, the Golden Gate, Binion’s, the El Cortez, Four Queens, the Las Vegas Club, Las Vegas Plaza, and Main Street Station.

Culinary Workers’ Union Local 226 spokeswoman Bethany Khan told the Associated Press the union is committed to keeping “good, middle-class” jobs in Nevada.

The union represents housekeepers, bartenders, and cocktail and food servers.

The contracts expired last June, and a number of casinos Downtown and on the Strip have reached new five-year agreements with the Culinary and with the Bartenders Union. Local 226 members voted in February to end a contract extension, and in March voted to authorize a strike if no agreements are reached.
