New Australian Casino Tax

A new gaming tax will require Northern Territory casinos in Australia to turn over one-tenth of their poker profits to the government. The tax is supposed to increase the government’s take from $1.2 million to $8 million.

Starting this month, casinos in Australia’s Northern Territory will pay a new tax on poker machines that would appreciably hike the government’s annual share.

According to Sky News Australia, the new tax imposed on SkyCity Casino in Darwin and Lasseters Hotel Casino in Alice Springs is expected to raise $8 million per year for the NT government, a huge increase on the $1.2 million generated in 2014.

The money will be added to the Community Benefit Levy, to which pubs and hotels already contribute.
