New Edmonton Racetrack, Casino Debut

Century Mile Racetrack and Casino recently opened in South Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Owned by Colorado-based Century Casinos, the $46.6 million venue is located on Edmonton International Airport land, near Leduc, on the main highway between Calgary and Edmonton. The 1-mile racetrack replaces the now-shuttered Northlands Park’s 5/8-mile track.

Horse Racing Alberta Chief Executive Officer Kent Verlik said the Century Mile racetrack “will provide improved racing and safety for the horse athletes who will compete along with their jockeys or drivers for many years to come. What it gives you is longer stretches. That’s where all the action happens near the end of the race, so you’ve got this nice long straightaway stretch. It’s going to be exciting.”

The new 89,700 square foot casino features 550 slot machines and electronic table games, 14 video lottery terminals, a REPLAY gaming stadium with 28 unique play stations and an interactive digital wall display and an off-track betting room, plus a restaurant and lounge area. Century Casinos took over operation of the facility on January 1 and added 20 off-track betting parlors to the 13 already operated by Century Bets.

Officials now are preparing for the opening weekend of thoroughbred racing on the new racetrack, set for Sunday, April 28.
