Belmar, New Jersey Mayor Matt Doherty has been named deputy executive director of the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority—a $150,000 post.

Doherty, 44, a Democrat, told the Press of Atlantic City his experience as mayor of Belmar—another popular Jersey Shore tourist town—made him a candidate for the job filled by the new administration of Gov. Phil Murphy, a fellow Democrat.

The authority’s main mission is to bolster development and tourism in Atlantic City.

“That’s exactly what we’ve done in Belmar very successfully for the last seven-plus years,” Doherty said.

According to the Press, Doherty is married to Maggie Moran, a Democratic political insider and principal in an influential Asbury Park public affairs firm. She was on the staff of former Democratic Governor Jon Corzine. Her firm was awarded a $15 million advertising contract by Republican Governor Chris Christie’s administration to manage the anti-addiction campaign “Reach NJ.”
