New Jersey Sports Betting Appeal Delayed

New Jersey may have to wait until September to find out if the U.S. Supreme Court will hear its appeal challenging a federal ban on sports betting. Professional sports leagues and the U.S. Department of Justice have been granted an extension until May 14 to file their case against New Jersey’s petition.

According to online reports, the U.S. Department of Justice and the professional sports leagues have been granted an extension to file their opposition briefs to New Jersey’s U.S. Supreme Court challenge of a federal ban on sports betting.

New Jersey is challenging the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, a federal ban that limits sports betting to four states.

The Department of Justice and the national sports leagues have received an extension from later this month to May 14 to file their briefs opposing the case.

The Supreme Court will then decide whether to hear the case, a decision not expected until September.

New Jersey has received support in its case from the states of West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Meanwhile Mississippi has formed a task force to study sports betting in the state, as well as online gambling.
