New Mexico Tribes Seek New Compacts

Seven New Mexico tribes want to renew their state gaming compacts in the next legislative session. Several tribes' compacts expired in June, others do not have a compact and the Pojoaque Pueblo, led by Governor George Rivera (l.), is seeking a compact directly from the federal government.

The New Mexico Legislative and Finance Committee recently announced the legislature plans to consider seven gaming compacts in its upcoming session.

The compacts of the Acoma pueblo and the Navajo, Mescalero and Jicarilla tribes expired in June and will be submitted to the legislature for renewal. The Zuni and Jemez pueblos currently do not have state gaming compacts and are seeking them to offer gaming on their lands.

The Pojoaque pueblo is not negotiating with the state and instead is seeking a gaming compact directly from the federal government. However a federal judge ruled that pueblo and the state must try to mediate a compact before the Interior Department can grant one. A pueblo official said it wants to operate its two casinos without supervision from the state.
