Macau slot machines will eventually be outfitted with clocks that flash intermittently to show the local time, the city’s casino regulator recently informed GGRAsia. The requirement is part of the city’s Electronic Gaming Machine Technical Standards version 2.0, which became effective September 1.
“The purpose of a clock on the gaming machine is for the promotion of responsible gaming,” said a statement from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ). “All machines will need to be retrofitted with the clock by the end of the year 2024.”
At the end of June, Macau casinos had 9,871 slot machines, according to DICJ data. The new clocks must flash at the beginning of each play session, and at least every 10 minutes thereafter, according to the new regulation.
The revised standards also specify that player screens or other interface points do not have any hidden touch points or hidden buttons that “affect game play and/or that impact the integrity or outcome of the game, except as provided for by the game rules,” the regulator stated.
