New York Casino Environmental Assessment OK’d

After a state appeals court ordered it redone, the Tyre, New York, Town Board approved a second environmental impact assessment for a proposed Finger Lakes casino that faces opposition from local gaming operations and others.

The Tyre Town Board in Tyre, New York, for a second time approved an environmental impact assessment for the proposed Finger Lakes Casino.

A state appeals court overturned a prior assessment and ordered a new one, which the Town Board reviewed during 25 hours of public hearings and approved on October 1.

The appeals court ruled the Town Board’s prior assessment did not provide a clearly written “negative declaration” and negated the results.

New York’s State Environmental Quality Review Act requires thorough reviews of the potential environmental impacts of new developments.

Opponents of the proposed Finger Lakes Casino challenged the first environmental impact assessment, saying the board did not do it properly.

Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack and the Oneida Indian Nation, which owns the Turning Stone Casino, are among those opposing the proposed Finger Lakes casino, saying it would have a detrimental impact on their operations and local economies.
