Newspaper: Extend Lockout Laws to Sydney’s Star Casino

An editorial in the Sydney Morning Herald is calling for an end to the Star Casino’s (l.) exemption from alcohol lockout laws. The government recently found that violent incidents have been underreported in the area.

The Sydney Morning Herald has called for New South Wales Premier Mike Baird to eliminate a casino exemption in alcohol lockout laws. A leaked internal NSW government review of violence at the casino shows “significant under-reporting of incidents” the Herald reported, and indicates that Liquor and Gaming NSW inspectors say there may be three times more incidents than official crime statistics show and almost five times more than those reported to senior casino managers.

The Star denies the report and says it has strong rules to prevent violence on-site and blocks intoxicated patrons from entering. The lockout laws include a 1:30 a.m. “last call” rule and a 3 a.m. rule for venues offering continuous live entertainment.
