The National Indian Gaming Commission has named Samuel Wetzler, a veteran of 25 years in tribal gaming, director of the Portland Region. His region includes 54 casinos owned by 48 tribes in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
Wetzler released a statement: “For the better part of the past two decades I’ve worked for gaming tribes and look forward to continue the mission, principles, and priorities of the National Indian Gaming Commission.”
NIGC continued to function during the nearly three week government shutdown because its operations are funded by fees from tribal casinos. NIGC said it was expanding tribal consultation in 2019 and “improving intergovernmental coordination,” while providing technical assistance and training to tribal gaming commissions.
