The city council of North Bay, Ontario, voted last month to support a $30 million, 300 slot machine casino in the South End of the city. The casino would also have three restaurants and produce 200 jobs.
The city would get 5 percent of the casino’s revenue each year, estimated to be about $1 million. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLG) has estimated the casinos in Northern Ontario have generated tens of millions of dollars over the past two decades.
Sault Ste. Marie, which 434 slots and 11 tabled, received $27 million since the casino opened in 1999.
The proposed North Bay casino would be smaller than that: 300 slots and ten table games.
Sudbury, which has 407 slots, has received $38.2 million since 1999. Thunder Bay, which has a casino with 434 slots and 11 tables, has paid the city $40.7 million since it opened in 2000.
