North Carolina Near to Creating Gaming Commission

The legislature of North Carolina is moving a bill that would create a state commission that would oversee boxing, the lottery, bingo and raffles. Lawmakers left out daily fantasy sports from the bill. A lottery commission already exists, so it’s unclear what would happen to that organization.

The North Carolina legislature is advancing a bill that would create a new state commission to oversee the lottery, bingo, raffles and boxing. Lawmakers did not include daily fantasy sports in the mix.

The bill was advanced by a vote of the House Judiciary Committee last week. The original bill, which included fantasy sports, did not pass the committee last week. Language in that bill that defined fantasy sports as not gambling doomed it.

Now lawmakers are debating an amendment to remove video lottery games from the commission’s purview. They are also considering sports betting and steeplechase amendments.

The state already has a lottery commission, so any bill creating a new commission would have to address that fact.
