North Carolina Sports, Horseracing Betting Bill Advances

A North Carolina Senate committee advanced a bill allowing betting on professional and college sports and off-track horseraces at casinos owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The measure's sponsor, state Senator Jim Davis, said sports and horserace wagering could generate an additional $14 million for the tribe and $1 million for the state each year.

The North Carolina Senate Commerce Committee recently voted to approve a measure allowing betting on professional and college sports and off-track horseracing at Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian casinos. The bill now will move on to another Senate committee.

State Senator Jim Davis, the bill’s sponsor, said sports and horserace betting could generate $14 million in additional annual tribal revenue and $1 million for the state.

Under current state law, the Eastern Band offers live poker, slot machines and video gambling on tribal lands.

Conservative Christian groups oppose the legislation.
