North Dakota: An International Wagering Force

North Dakota's 12 licensed online gambling sites take horseracing wagers from Sweden, Hong Kong and other international locations, making the state "an important player" in the industry, said state Racing Commission Director Gunner Lacour. He noted wagers will reach $600 million in the current fiscal year, up from $482 million in fiscal 2015.

North Dakota State Racing Commission Director Gunner Lacour recently testified before legislators that among international wagering markets, the state is considered “an important player.” In fact, Lacour noted, bets are taken from as far away as Sweden and Hong Kong. As a result, wagers through North Dakota’s 12 licensed online gambling sites are forecast to reach 0 million in the current fiscal year, up from 2 million in fiscal 2015.

Lacour said the state receives a portion of the account deposit wagering operations which through taxes help fund the racing commission, racetracks and horse groups. He added in the last two-year budget cycle, the racing commission returned to the state $457,500–$68,000 more than it had been allocated in funding.
