North Dakota Mulls Sports Betting

Like its season of warm weather, North Dakota’s legislature season is brief. So Rep. Jason Docktor is acting quickly to introduce a bill that would legalize sports betting in the 80 days he has to convince fellow lawmakers.

North Dakota Rep. Jason Docktor was the first lawmaker in the state to file a bill that would legalize sports betting. Docktor’s bill would legalize sports betting at the state’s charity casinos, the only gaming allowed.

Co-sponsoring the bill is Rep. Thomas Beadle.

Proceeds from the charity casinos support a panorama of causes from senior care to youth hockey.

The North Dakota legislature has an 80-day session once every other year.

The bill would only allow sports betting during hours when alcoholic beverages are served at whatever locations they are allowed, such as a teller window or kiosk. The bill does not address sports book on mobile platforms. It also leaves open how much it would be taxed. Charitable organizations would pay $150 per year to offer it.
