Norway’s state-owned gambling monopoly Norsk Tipping has announced stricter loss limit restrictions for those under 20 years old, iGB reported May 30. The restrictions went into effect June 1.
Minors placing bets will be allowed a maximum loss of NOK2,000 (£145/€168/$181) per month. That is in addition to the NOK20,000 per month mandatory loss limit already in force for all customers.
Norsk Tipping reasons that this age group has an increased risk of harm.
The company’s director of responsibility and communication Tonje Sagstuen said in a statement: “It is well documented that younger players are more vulnerable to developing gambling problems,” adding, “Statistics from both the University of Bergen and the helpline for gambling addicts show that the incidence of gambling problems is higher among younger players than in other age groups.”
This group also has less impulse control, “Therefore, they have a higher risk of making bad choices,” she said.
She added, “Norsk Tipping’s main purpose is to prevent gambling problems. In comparison, the alcohol law also differentiates between age groups over and under 20.”
