The deal sees Novomatic take over the reins at Vikings Casino, which operates 10 live gaming casinos throughout France, including on the Côte d’Azur. The acquisition, subject to certain conditions and regulatory approvals, significantly expands Novomatic’s portfolio in one of the largest gaming markets in Europe.
Stefan Krenn, Novomatic’s executive board member, said: “With the acquisition of Vikings Casinos, we are consistently pursuing our international growth strategy and strengthening our position as a leading provider in the European gaming market.
“With this step, we have successfully laid the foundation for further sustainable growth in France.”
Vikings Casinos looking ahead
No financial details regarding the deal were given. There is also no information as to how Vikings Casinos’ management and structure will be transformed under the group’s new owner.
However, Vikings Casinos’ chief executive, Luc Le Borgne, looked to the future as he spoke of how the acquisition will positively impact the business.
Le Borgne said: “The acquisition by Novomatic opens up new opportunities for growth and further development. We are confident that the integration into such an experienced and successful company as Novomatic will help us to further strengthen our position in the French market. This change will enable us to work even more efficiently and benefit from the resources and expertise of the new owner.”
Novomatic’s gaming operations growth
Novomatic’s international casino portfolio includes around 2,200 casinos, electronic casinos and sports betting outlets in markets such as Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the Netherlands.
In 2023, its most recent reporting period, Novomatic said its gaming operations segment contributed a significant share to record total revenue. The highest level of growth was seen in Italy following the acquisition of HBG Group.
Novomatic’s move in France comes just weeks after it agreed to sell Atlas Group, the parent of its Admiral Austria business, to Tipico Group.
Vikings Casinos’ flagship establishments in Frejus and Sanary-sur-Mer each have 150 slot machines along with roulette tables, and dining and entertainment. Normandy-headquartered Vikings Casino was formed in 1998 following the merger of Vikings SAS and Jeux C. Casino Consultant.
