Among the many ballot initiatives that California voters will be asked to decide on in November, including measures aimed at capping the state’s health care costs, and raising the maximum medical malpractice judgments, and a .1 billion state water bond, will be a lesser known issue, that of overruling the state’s gaming pacts with two Indian tribes, including a tribe that wants to build an off-reservation casino.
The tribes in question are the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians and the Wiyot Tribe based in Madera and Humboldt counties, both in Northern California.
Although the tribes are relatively unknown, the issue of off-reservation casinos is a hot-button issue, with gaming tribes on both sides of it. A lot of money is likely to be spent on this issue in the months leading up to the election.
