From the it-was-bound-to-happen file: the Ohio Casino Control Commission opened up a new avenue for sports betting— gift cards. The Commission has approved gift cards as a source of funding for player accounts and redeemed via apps or in-person.
They should be available to buy in the near future. But the cards must be reviewed and approved before they can go on sale. So far no one has submitted a card for review, spokesperson Jessica Franks said. Several companies made inquiries which led to the promulgation of rules issued April 10, according to Yogonet Gaming News.
Ohio sportsbooks brought in over $82 million in February based on $638 million in wagers placed across the state, with the overwhelming majority betting through the mobile app. The commission paid $552 million in winnings to bettors. In person bets accounted for $17 million.
February’s numbers declined compared to January, when Ohio residents bet $1.1 billion leading to $208.9 million in revenue for sportsbooks.
