Ohio Sports Betting Law Requires Monthly Tax Payments

When Ohio wrote the regulations for sportsbooks, the state required taxes to be paid daily by operators. Sportsbooks enlightened the state of the trouble with that approach—a new law will make it monthly.

Ohio Sports Betting Law Requires Monthly Tax Payments

As Ohio prepares for the date to launch sports betting, the legislature passed one more law to change a regulation from requiring payment of taxes on a daily basis to a monthly basis. Operators expressed concern with the daily measure.

The idea was if casinos could do it, so could sportsbooks. Not so, operators say. Sportsbooks have far less revenue on a daily basis and the variations from one day to the next don’t work well when it comes to taxes.

The new bill approved in both houses addresses the tax issue by referring to “one calendar month with regard to which a sports gaming proprietor is required to pay the tax.” Furthermore, the amendment states that “sports gaming proprietors shall file returns on or before the fifteenth day of each month, not later than noon.”

House Majority Floor Leader Bill Seitz told OH Bets in April via email that “the daily reporting does not fit nicely with the reality of sports betting.”

The universal launch date for sports betting is set to take place on January 1, 2023, the Casino Control Commission revealed last week.
