Oklahoma Tribal Casino Installs Facial Recognition Technology

Muscogee Nation Gaming Enterprises recently hired Oosto to equip the cameras at its River Spirit Casino and Resort in Tulsa, Oklahoma with face-based security software. The 200,000-square-foot facility is visited by more than 10,000 individuals daily, said Travis Thompson, MNGE director of compliance, noting the security team must deal with the challenge of ID’ing bad actors in real time.

“We have eliminated most of the manual processes associated with identifying bad actors as they enter the casino. When a patron does something inside the property that is considered a crime or unwanted, that person is barred from entering the property again. Their profile is entered into Oosto, and the system looks for that face every time they enter the property,” Thompson said.

He noted since the Oosto software was installed, it has made three to five positive detections a day. “We know that we’re keeping the right people out and I think that makes our players more comfortable,” Thompson said.

He explained facial recognition technology allows the casino security team to combat thefts and fraud; remain in compliance with regulatory requirements; and research video footage retrospectively for investigative purposes. The software allows the casino security team to make sure evicted and banned patrons are identified and apprehended, and to track persons of interest throughout the venue without disrupting other guests.

Thompson added, the system’s Centralized Intelligence Database module collects information on all bad actors from all of the tribe’s gaming properties. Its Inquiry/OnSearch Forensics Analytics tool lets security personnel review and analyze video from multiple sources for information about any activity before, during and after a perpetrator commits a crime.

“The investigations are a critical piece to how we use the system. It’s one of the areas that I really enjoy the most about it. We can backward search or we can forward search from the point we put in and so we know when people have been on our property and I think that’s extremely helpful to us,” Thompson said.
