OLG, Casino Workers Reach Pension Deal

An undisclosed, tentative deal has been reached between locked-out members of Unifor and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. The OLG locked out the workers last month after reaching an impasse on retirement benefits negotiations for unionized workers at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto (l.), Casino Brantford, and Sudbury Downs in Chelmsford, Ontario.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced a tentative deal has been reached with casino workers to end a labor dispute over retirement benefits.

Nearly 1,000 unionized workers at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Casino Brantford, and Sudbury Downs in Chelmsford had been locked out from their jobs by the OLG for three weeks after contract negotiations failed on September 19.

Unifor represents the workers, who are upset over the OLG’s plans to end casino worker eligibility for pension plans and rework them for more favorable terms.

Unifor Secretary-Treasurer Bob Orr said the workers are determined to protect their retirement plans and hopes the tentative deal will end the labor dispute.

Neither union nor OLG officials released any details on the tentative agreement, which Unifor members must approve through votes to be held among unionized workers at both impacted casinos.
