As long as the Houston Astros advance in the MLB playoffs, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale stands to make a lot of money on his hometown team.
In June, the Houston resident wagered $2 million that the Astros would win the World Series. If they do, Mattress Mack stands to take home the largest amount ever for a sportsbook—$22 million, according to CBS Sports.
For McIngvale, the bets serve as a hedge for his “Astros Win” retail promotion in which shoppers who spend $3,000 or more in furniture get their money back if the Astros win the series.
McIngvale also bet $1.25 million spread across three sportsbooks, also on an Astros win, which would pay out $35.6 million.
“Obviously the Astros win would be the worst-case scenario,” Caesars vice president Craig Mucklow told the Action Network. “This is the first time I’ve seen something like this wager in the futures market. It’s an exciting bet to take, but it would be nice if they got knocked out early.”
