The New York State Assembly did not act on a bill to legalize online poker in the state before New York’s 2016 legislative session ended, effectively killing the bill for this year.
But the state’s Senate had overwhelmingly approved the bill, which proponents say greatly increases the chances that online poker will be approved by New York in 2017. The Senate voted 53-5 in favor of the bill.
However, the bill got no traction in the Assembly and never came up for a committee vote.
Proponents of online gaming, however, said the Senate vote shows that there is support for the bill and it could fare much better in 2107. State Senator John Bonacic, sponsor of the bill, recently said in an interview that “all of the gaming interests” want online poker.
The bill proposed a 15-percent tax rate on online poker revenue.
