Online Poker Gains In Nevada, Dips in Delaware

Online poker revenues in Nevada were up 8.8 percent in May over April. The rise is attributed to the live World Series of Poker running in Las Vegas. Revenue figures for online gaming in Delaware, meanwhile, were down sharply for May, but volume of play was up suggesting that players were simply luckier than usual.

Online poker went in opposite directions in two of the three U.S. iGaming states.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released figures showing that online poker generated $862,000 in revenue in May, up 8.8 percent compared to $792,000 in April.

May was the second highest revenue month for online poker in Nevada behind only $926,000 generated during March.  The amount is also 49 percent higher than the amount collected from internet poker in May 2013.

Much of the rise is attributed to WSOP.com, which has launched several cross-promotional campaigns with the live World Series of Poker underway in Las Vegas.  Players at the event at the Rio casino in Las Vegas were given an area Rio for online gaming.

Also, players were able to compete online at the WSOP site in both Nevada and New Jersey to earn seats to various WSOP events.

Online gambling figures for Delaware in May were mixed showing that play was up, but casino revenue was down.

According to the Delaware Lottery, casino and poker revenue were both down sharply from April, but the casino handle—the amount of money wagered by players—was up sharply.

The total win for the month was $175,602.  The casino win was $118,131 down 29 percent from April.  Poker rake was $57,470 down 22 percent.

Table game bets, however, were up to $9 million from April’s $5.5 million, suggesting that players simply won more often in May.

Online poker traffic, however, remains slow with Delaware’s online rooms averaging just six players at any given time. The state is hoping to enact a compact to share players with Nevada in the coming months.
