Ontario Casino Appeal Dropped

Two groups in the Ontario city of Peterborough have dropped their opposition to a casino that would be built by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation. The groups, the Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) and AON Inc. agreed to stand down in return for promises of increased spending in the city’s south end.

An appeal against a casino proposed for the city of Peterborough, Ontario to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) has been dropped.

Those who had been planning the appeal have reportedly been appeased by financial concessions. This news was released after a closed meeting of the City of Peterborough city council.

The complaint had been filed by the Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) and AON Inc. after the city approved the zoning and plan amendments necessary to allow the casino in the south end of Peterborough.

An agreement was struck with the city, which committed to spend $150,000 over 20 years to promote the area and to beef up security in the downtown.

The report after the closed session stated: “AON and the DBIA have resolved their issues with both the city and the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (GCGC.)”
