Ontario Casino Reopens After Ransomware Attack

The Gateway Casino in London, Ontario, Canada has reopened two weeks after being forced to close abruptly by a ransomware attack, the London Free Press reported.

The casino, which is located in the Western Fair District of Ontario reopened May 1, following the reopening of Gateway Casinos and Entertainment in Innisfil.

Gateway’s communications and public affairs director Rob Mitchell told the Press: “We’re excited to be back in business and have employees back at work,” adding, “There is no indication that personal information was compromised, either guests, employees or vendors.”

Gateway operates 14 casinos in Ontario, which it is reopening in stages. Each reopening requires inspection and approval by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp (OLGC.)

The spokesman said Gateway expected to reopen its casinos in Clinton, Chatham, Hanover, Point Edward, Sarnia and Woodstock this week.

The ransomware attack on the casino operator’s IT system first occurred April 16. Once the breach was discovered, officials immediately closed the casinos and brought in cyber professionals to restore its systems.

Such an attack involves locking a computer system and only reopening it when the hacker is paid a ransom in cash.
