Ontario Town Raises Concerns Over Casino

The Peterborough city council in Ontario, Canada did not notify Cavan Monaghan township officials regarding a meeting about rezoning for the new Shorelines Casino. Township Mayor Scott McFadden said that "adversely affected" the township's opportunity to review supporting materials, and the township had "a number of preliminary comments and questions" about the casino project.

The township of Cavan Monaghan in Ontario, Canada recently notified the city council of Peterborough that it has some issues regarding the new Shorelines Casino. The city did not notify township officials that it was holding a meeting on May 9 about rezoning the proposed casino site.

In a letter to City Clerk John Kennedy, Township Mayor Scott McFadden wrote, “The reduced notice period has adversely affected the Township’s ability to thoroughly review the supporting documentation and provide comprehensive comments on the Applications. The Township does, however, have a regarding the Applications for your consideration.”

Among McFadden’s issues is the fact that a casino could adversely affect industrial development in the area, since demand would increase for commercial use on the remaining industrial land. In addition, reviews of the Traffic Impact Study and other associated studies and plans relating to the Site Plan application have not been reviewed.
