The Coquille Indian Tribe of Medford, Oregon plans to build the 111-room Hotel of the Cedars next to its proposed Cedars at Bear Creek on 3.6 acres along the Pacific Highway. The tribe has requested the Bureau of Indian Affairs to put the land, the site of a bowling alley and a restaurant, into trust, but has received no word yet on that process.
Ray Doering, a spokesman for the Coquille Economic Development Corp., told the Medford Mail Tribune: “We have been working on this project for over a year. We’re hoping that this is something the community can be proud of.”
Building the hotel would require removing an existing church, warehouse and shop building. Since the hotel would not be on tribal land, it would require a zoning change to allow a taller building.
Commenting on the tribe’s plans, Medford City Council President Kevin Stine told the Tribune: “I think it’s interesting that they’re moving forward with this, and it’s a good investment in Medford.”
