It’s a different president and a different governor for the Coquille Tribe of Oregon’s efforts to build a casino in south Medford.

The Trump administration, Governor Kate Brown and the neighboring Cow Creek Tribe all opposed the proposal in 2020. But with a Democratic administration and new governor, Tina Kotek, to be sworn in next month, the Coquille Tribe is trying again with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).

The tribe currently operates the Compass Hotel by Margaritaville on tribal property and it seeks to repurpose an old bowling alley into a Class II casino.

The BIA is working on a Draft Environmental Impact Statement” for the tribe and public comments on that document must be received by the BIA by February 23,2023.
