PA Bill Would End Casino Smoking Loophole

A Pittsburgh-area lawmaker has introduced a bill in the Pennsylvania legislature to close the loopholes in the 2008 Clean Indoor Air Act, which banned smoking indoors but included an exemption for casinos.

Pennsylvania, which allows smoking on 50 percent of casino floors, is one of a growing number of states, including neighboring New Jersey, to seek a total ban of smoking on casino floors. Rep Dan Frankel, an Allegheny County Democrat, wants to end the smoking exemptions with his bill, dubbed the Protecting Workers from Secondhand Smoke Act.

“Pennsylvanians should not have to choose between their jobs and their health,” Frankel told WTAJ News. “That’s why I’ll soon be reintroducing my legislation to close the loopholes that threaten the health of Pennsylvania workers.”

In addition to casinos, the bill would end the smoking exemption for private clubs, hotels, VFW clubs, and bars that do not serve food.
