In an effort to minimize the risk of children playing slot machines, the president of Paraguay has issued an executive decree banning such machines in public places.

The provision takes effect 90 days after its appearance in an April 20 publication in the Official Gazette, according to Ice365.

The law signed by President Mario Abdo Benitez said it protects “children and adolescents against the influence and risks derived from electronic games of chance that operate outside casinos or authorized gaming venues, in order to avoid possible harm that affects their physical and mental health.”

Among the prohibited type of public places: markets, hairdressers, pharmacies, and fast-food restaurants. A business which violates the law will face fines, with proceeds earmarked to gambling addiction programs.
