Paraguay Names New Top Gaming Regulator

A new gaming regulator, to head the National Gaming Commission (Conajzar) has been named by the president of Paraguay. President Mario Abdo Benítez has appointed José Antonio Ortiz Báez to the post.

Paraguay’s President Mario Abdo Benítez has appointed José Antonio Ortiz Báez to head the National Gaming Commission (Conajzar.) He replaces Óscar Ramón Portillo, who had been named by the previous government.

Conajzar is made up of representatives of the Treasury, departments, Ministry of the Interior, municipalities and the Department of Charity and Social Assistance; although it is overseen by the Treasury.

It controls and supervises all games of chance, such as the national lottery. One of its jobs is to prepare bidding rules and conditions for granting gaming concessions, to set tax rates and recommends appointments to the commission.

One of Baez’s first acts was to meet with the president of the Ibero-American Corporation of State Lotteries and Bets, Luis Gama.
