An Argentine company hopes to bring a floating casino to Paraguay.
Comercial de Turismo wants to put the eight-level casino ship in the coastal area of Puerto Presidente Franco. The boat, now anchored on the Argentina side of Iguazú, will include a hotel, restaurants and the casino.
The $60 million project can be completed in seven months, and generate some 200 new jobs in the Triple Frontier region, not far from the Brazilian border, according to SBC Americas.
Magno Álvarez, Paraguayan consul in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, called the proposal an “unprecedented attraction.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs helped put the deal together as part of its effort to expand international investment.
Santiago Lucenti, representative of the Argentina company, has met with Foreign Minister Euclides Acevedo to communicate information about the plans.
“There’s a commitment to share the procedures with the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, so that the State Merchant Navy can authorize the arrival of this ship and have the Paraguayan flag on it,” said Santiago Lucenti, a rep from the Argentine company.
“We’ll speak with the Minister of Tourism, Sofía Montiel de Afara, because obviously this is a tourist attraction, and also with Conajzar, which would issue a license to the casino,” he said.
There are currently two casino hotels operating on the Argentine side of Iguazú.
