Penn Eyes Vegas, Mississippi

Penn National is looking to Las Vegas and an expanded Southern presence as near-term catalysts in a growth strategy built around diversity. It includes some $40 million in fresh investment in the Tropicana (l.) and, on the other side of the country, the purchase of two casinos in Tunica.

Diversification and expansion will be the cornerstones of Penn National Gaming’s strategy, the company said in announcing its results for the first quarter.

The Wyomissing, Pa.-based operator reported a 2.6 percent increase in total revenues to $776.2 million for the three months ended March 31, despite mixed results in some of its regional markets.

In the meantime, the company is pouring $40 million into the Tropicana Las Vegas and growing its Mississippi presence with the $44 million purchase of Bally’s Casino Tunica and Resorts Casino Tunica.

Speaking of the Tropicana improvements, CEO Tim Wilmott said, “We have leveraged the property’s high-quality room base and our player data base while enhancing key amenities and the overall guest experience.”

This includes “improving the casino floor experience and expanding and upgrading food and beverage offerings,” he said.

Wilmott said he expects the property will get a further boost in June when a pedestrian bridge between the MGM Grand and the Tropicana is reopened.
