Penn Resumes Mini-Casino Construction at York Galleria

Penn National Gaming has resumed construction of its Category 4 casino at the York Galleria mall in Springettsbury, Township, Pennsylvania, and the operator says completion is targeted for mid-2021.

Construction on the $120 million Hollywood Casino at York Galleria had been halted in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Construction is resuming and we expect to open the facility in the second half of 2021,” Penn National spokesman Jeff Morris told the York Dispatch.

The $project, which was originally estimated to be completed in 12 months, was unanimously approved for a gambling license by the state Gaming Control Board last December.

“We had a great deal of confidence in Penn National Gaming throughout the pandemic,” Don Bishop, a Springettsbury Township supervisor, told the newspaper. “They were in a really tough spot but they continue to keep us up to date. We are very pleased that they are continuing with the project.”

Category 4 casinos, commonly called mini-casinos, were created under Pennsylvania’s 2017 gaming expansion law. They must be tied to a current casino licensee, and are limited to 750 slot machines and 30 table games, with an additional 10 tables by petition after opening. Penn’s project was the third Category 4 license approved by the state, and it will be the second to open, after Cordish’s Live! Casino Pittsburgh, opening next month.

Penn National selected the York Galleria as the site of its first mini-casino in September 2018 for a bid of $50 million, the highest fee paid for any Category 4 license.
