Peru Casinos On Lockdown Until August

The tourism industry in Peru is in “intensive care” due to the coronavirus, and will not reopen until August, according to Carlos Canales Anchorena, president of the National Chamber of Tourism. The tourism sector will reopen gradually. Casinos will be the last to open to the public as part of the “Tourism for All” program set to launch in July.

Anchorena told Caretas magazine that the reopening will happen in three phases, with tourism part of Phase III, which begins June 15, when the health emergency is expected to end.

“The casino and slot machine sector is the most supervised sector of all tourist activities, generating 10,000 jobs. That sector is, according to the Minister of Production, in the last stage and in August it will be reinstated,” he said.

Peru has begun enforcing strict new measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra passed a controversial measure to control the pandemic on April 2, quarantining men and women on different days of the week.
