A bill introduced by Peruvian Congresswoman Diana Gonzales to regulate online betting and impose a 20 percent tax has received a unanimous vote from the Finance Committee of the Peruvian Congress.
The tax would be used to help make up for the reduction of Peruvian sports having their budget reduced. It would also take aim at money laundering, which has also harmed sports, she said.
Introducing her bill, Gonzales said, “Peruvian sports, after the Pan American Games in Lima 2019, have received less budget each year and, in addition, the income that the Peruvian Institute of Sports (IPD) received directly through slots and casinos has been reduced due to the pandemic,” Gonzales said.
Under the bill, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) would be tasked with granting online gaming licenses. Taxes raised would be earmarked for IPD. Licenses would be good for six years.
The Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) of the Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and AFPs would supervise sportsbooks. It would also be in charge of prize payments, taxes and fines.
