Philadelphia Restaurateur Jose Garces Bets on Atlantic City

Philadelphia chef Jose Garces will open three new restaurants at Atlantic City’s Tropicana Casino in March. Garces has had an up and down history in the resort, but continues to be a major presence in the city’s restaurant scene.

When the former Revel casino closed in Atlantic City in 2014, Philadelphia chef and restaurateur Jose Garces was forced to close four of his most successful restaurants.

Now he is planning three new restaurants at the city’s Tropicana casino, which are scheduled for a March opening. Tropicana first announced a deal with Garces last year and has now outlined the three new establishments.

According to the Press of Atlantic City, the flagship restaurant will be Olon Restaurante, a seafood restaurant that replaces the property’s Fin restaurant. It’s the first venture into seafood for Garces. Also opening will be a Japanese sake and noodles restaurant called Okatshe and an interactive bar called La Cerveceria, which will feature live entertainment.

The new restaurants mark a return for Garces who had to close four successful restaurants at Revel including the Spanish tapas restaurant Amada and the Asian-inspired Yuboka Dim Sum & Noodle. Garces says he hopes to re-open all four if Revel re-opens this year as Ten under new owner Glenn Straub. Garces has said the Revel restaurants were among his most successful.

Garces’ return also gives Atlantic City restaurants from five “Iron Chefs” from the hit Food Network show. The Borgata has restaurants from iron chefs Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, Geoffrey Zakarian and Michael Symon.
