Playtech Exits Belgian Market

Software company Playtech is leaving the Belgian online gambling market due to regulatory reasons forcing betting platforms that use its software to stop taking bets from Belgian players.

Playtech appears to have left the Belgian online gambling market causing notices to be sent to affiliates of UK bookies William Hill and Gala Coral—which use Playtech software—that both companies will no longer take bets from Belgium.

The notices said the decision was made for “regulatory reasons beyond our control,” but appears to stem from Playtech’s departures from the market.

Playtech is just the latest company to exit the market. Earlier this month, Betclic Everest also left after €600,000 of the company’s funds were seized by Belgium’s Public Prosecution Office in February. Belgian officials say the funds were proceeds of illegal online gambling transactions in the country.

Playtech has not said whether it intends to apply for a Belgium gaming license.
