Pokagons Complete Tribal Village Phase I

Eight new homes recently were completed in phase one of Pokégnek Édawat Hartford (l.), the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians' new tribal village near Hartford, Michigan. Two more phases are planned with more housing, a community center and a park. The tribe owns the Four Winds Casinos in New Buffalo, Hartford and Dowagiac.

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians announced it has completed the first phase of Pokégnek Édawat Hartford, the tribe’s new tribal village near Hartford, Michigan. Tribal Chairman John P. Warren said eight homes–townhomes and two duplexes—have been built. Two additional phases are planned at the village, including more housing, a community center and a park. Warren said half of the homes will be designated for tribal elders.

“We have 39 families on the waiting list for homes in Hartford, so the demand is high. We look forward to completing the additional phases to serve our families in need,” Warren said. He noted several units will be handicap-accessible.

The Pokagon Housing and Facilities Department manages the homes in the tribal village and offers Pokagon Citizens assistance with home ownership, loans, lease-to-own opportunities and rental and homeless prevention programs.

The 5,000-member Pokagon Band, which owns the Four Winds Casino Resort in New Buffalo, Four Winds Hartford and Four Winds Dowagiac, also manages Pokégnek Édawat Dowagiac, a tribal village with 66 homes, a community center, and health center.
