Portsmouth Delays Vote on Rivers Casino

The Portsmouth, Virginia city council May 11 voted to delay a vote on rezoning and permits for the proposed $300 million Rivers Casino & Hotel until May 25.

Although several council members said they were “blown away” by the plans for the Rush Street Gaming project, two who hadn’t seen the plans said they wanted to be blown away too before voting.

Councilmember Christopher Woodward said that for a project of such scope, the city should try to have the best casino that would have the most positive impact on the city.

Proponents hope the Virginia Lottery Board will approve a casino operator license by autumn.
