Portugal’s gaming regulator, Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo, has announced record-breaking gaming revenues for the fourth quarter of 2017. The figures have been attributed to a surge in sports bets.

Sports wagers tops the list

The gaming industry in Portugal enjoyed a robust fourth quarter, according to figures posted by the Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal, the country’s gaming regulator.

SRIJ showed that the seven locally-licensed online gambling operators generated combined revenue of €36.5 million (US$44.77 million) in the three months to 31st December, nearly €10 million higher than the same period of the previous year.

Sports wagering was the main source of income for operators in Portugal for the year, with revenues of €68.1 million ($84 million), with football comprising more than 75 percent of the bets.

Online gaming revenues came to €54.4 million with slots accounting for 45 percent; poker 19.7 percent; French roulette 19.2 percent; blackjack 9.2 percent; and poker tournaments 6.7 percent, CalvinAyre.com.

Portugal launched regulated online gaming in May 2016.
