SCML brought in €805M

The gaming industry in Portugal set a new record for 2017, generating €3.5 billion (US$4 billion) in revenues, up 11 percent year-on-year. The figure represents income generated from casino games, instant lotteries and online sports betting, according to CDC Gaming Reports.

The top contributor was state-run charity Santa Casa de Misericordia de Lisboa, which posted net sales of €805 million (US$950 million).

Overall, betting rose 9.1 percent, with the biggest increase coming from Placard, the sports-betting division of SCML, which was up 30 percent to €502 million, becoming the third largest game in terms of gross revenues. Instant games increased 9.4 percent to €1,487 million, comprising almost half of SCML’s total games.

Euromillions, which offers a prize of €1 million every week, rose 5.1 percent in 2017. But sales for all other games declined, CDC reported.

In its first full year of operations, online gaming generated €122.5 million (US$144.5 million) in revenues, with football accounting for 77 percent of the total.
