Online gaming revenue in Portugal came to €65.4 million (US$70.9 million) in the fourth quarter of 2019, up 55 percent, reflecting health in most segments of the gaming industry. Online gaming taxes for Q4 amounted to €38.8 million, up by 67.4 percent. But land-based gaming revenues saw a slight decline of 0.8 percent year-on-year.
According to statistics from the Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ), revenue for the three months ending December 31 saw a rise of 52.1 percent year-on-year from €43.0 million in the last quarter of 2018. This period also represented the eighth consecutive quarter in which the market set a new record in revenue, going past the previous high of €54.1 million in Q3.
The revenue from sports wagering for the quarter came to €33.4 million. Consumers bet €185.3 million, which is 67.5 percent higher than the same quarter in 2018. Football was the most popular sport among gamblers, accounting for 74.6 percent of all bets. Basketball was a distant second with 13.3 percent, followed by tennis at 6.3 percent.
Revenues from online games of chance also saw an increase of 49.1 percent year-on-year to €32.0 million, with the amount spent by players amounting to €852.2 million, a 47.9% percent gain. Slots accounted for 69 percent of online casino wagering action in Q4.
