Puerto Rico Bill Directs Gaming Revenue to Police Retirement

The Senate of Puerto Rico has voted for a bill that would half of the licensing and regulatory fees for slots machines found at convenience stores to a pension fund for police. There are about 45,000 machines in the commonwealth.

A tax reform bill passed last week in the Puerto Rico Senate would direct gaming revenue into a trust fund for police retirement.

The money for the pension fund would come from licensing and regulation of about 45,000 slot machines found convenience stores outside of casinos. Half will go to the pension fund with 45 percent to municipalities and 5 percent to tourism.

This tax bill has been criticized by the Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association, which cites figures from a Spectrum Gaming Study that says allowing slot machines would negatively impact gaming revenue.
